DAY SIX

The simplest acts of creation or making can sometimes give pleasure far in excess of the effort put in to them.

Here is a wooden toggle and the tool I used to carve it.

I needed something to tension a small line and could just as easily have used anything around which it could have been wrapped, but instead chose to invest 45 minutes in a bit of whittling.

As it happens the toggle was a bit too small and the knife a bit too blunt* for the job but nonetheless I still get pleasure from looking at it and the fact that I took the time to make it.

As an antidote to the harried lives so many of find themeselves living the advice is often to slow down or spend my time with nature. My advice would be to try both at the same time by picking up a stick and whittling something.

 Onwards...

* I didn't come to any harm, but if you are going to try it a sharp knife is a safer tool.
